There are two main characters in 13 Reasons Why. One of the main characters name is Hannah Baker and she was a student in high school but this main character is dead; at the start of the book we learn that Hannah killed herself. She looked from the outside a normal girl nothing going wrong in her life. She was a normal person but before she died she made tapes telling her story and gave it to one of the people who made her kill herself. The other main character is Clay Jensen he is also was a normal person that everyone liked and knew him as a very nice person but after hearing Hannah's story he changed forever. The books talks about how a girl killed herself and why. This is done by tapes and Hannah had 13 reasons why she killed herself every tape is talking about one person so this means that 13 people had to do something with Hannah death. Hannah made the tapes and gave it to the first person she talks about in the tapes. How these tapes are going around is by telling the people in the first tape to give them to the next person on the tapes and if they don't give it to that next person then she has someone that will release the tapes in public and not just to the 13 people (Asher 7-8). One day Clay receive those tapes and now we are hearing Hannah story through the eyes of Clay. An overarching theme in the the book is to take responsible for your actions. This is shown in every single story that Hannah tells with the start. Most people Hannah talk about tried to avoid or ignore their problems, or their responsible. Then Hannah killed herself and putting a light on their responsible. With the first story it was Justin fault about spreading rumors about one kiss and that he kinda ruined Hannah first kiss but Justin does not accept that it was his fault the rumors spread even though he was the one to start it. All the other stories talks about what that person did and how it affected Hannah but the story that stood out was Clay's story. Hannah said it herself "Clay, honey, your name does not belong on this list ... You don't belong in the same way as the others" (Asher 200). The main reason why Clay is on this list to to just tell the other people her story in a more complete picture. The other theme or smaller theme in this book is what Hannah says, "Everything . . . affects everything" (Asher 201). What this means and is shown by the book is that well anything you do to a persons life with effect everything eles and that you can't just change one thing about someone without changing everything eles.
